Captn’s & Crew,
Well, June 27th was not what many of us expected as far as wind. Tuesday night was gusting to 20kts, and Wednesday morning the wind was still looking alive. As we approached the 18:00 gun the wind went to bed early. We only thought we were going to get a chance to sail in another gear. Again with lots of daylight, RC sent us on a long race expecting the wind to cooperate with us across B,A,B,A,B,CS(st), N8,D(st)@cedar,BW. Thankfully, in their wisdom they shortened course to a relocated, closer set D-Boat finish after N8. The J70 & J80 hitched a tow ride home to make it to the BBQ hosted by Steve Kenny, Greg Ames and the crew of Gossip. They outdid themselves. Grilling for everyone they provided Turkey Burgers, Jerk Chicken, Spare Ribs and Clams as well as a providing a rum bar. The kids charred marshmallows over the wood fire pit. Skidip! provided the club with a fresh keg of beer. We got two entries last night for the summer and fall series that brings our fleet up to 19 so far for the year.
Best Regards,
Chris

BYC Sailors,
Great race last night. Gordon and the RC set up a good long course for the longest daylight race of the year. Some tides and changing wind conditions made for lots of good sailing. It has come to my understanding that Big Boat cleaned the bottom of her keel between N12 and 10A. In all fairness it was low tide and I found that sand last year. Some of us made it back to the clubhouse and we fired up the grill and announced the results. We gave out first place glasses to the winners. Thanks to Roxanne for the June keg which we kicked. Skidip! will be the next beer sponsor. I hope to see more of you at the clubhouse next week.
Sail Fest is scheduled for June 30th. It is the same day as the Sag Harbor Yacht Club's John A. Ward Fourth of July Fireworks. As many of you saw in the constant contact, we are going to the club to enjoy the fireworks and will be encouraging the racers to meet and stay for the show. It is a BYO event, the grill will be available for your use. Gordon will be away for the 30th so I am looking for assistance or another race officer to handle race committee. Please contact me if you are interested.
Best Regards,
Chris

Breakwater in June - Newsletter
Dear Breakwater Yacht Club Members and Friends,
There are plenty of activities happening at our club with the season going into full swing now:
Racing: The May Cup races concluded successfully and the Summer Series is now in full swing. Race Committee Chair Chris DiSunno and Gordon Ryan on the RC Boat have set challenging courses and sailors gather after the races at the clubhouse to socialize and celebrate the results. If you are interested in racing, come to the clubhouse on Wednesday afternoon, meet skippers & crew and join. The 2012 Sailfest, originally scheduled for June 2, has now been rescheduled for June 30. If you haven’t registered your boat or as crew, please contact Chris DiSunno. Race Entry forms are also available on our website.
June 30 is also the evening of the Sag Harbor Yacht Club's John A. Ward Fourth of July Fireworks. Our club house will be open for members and their guests. BYO and enjoy a beautiful evening with other members and spectacular views of the fireworks from our deck & dock, first row seating guaranteed!
Clubhouse: We have important changes here: Jack Reiser has joined us as new Club Steward taking over from Steve Novak. Steve wanted to “retire” after many years as the heart and soul of the Breakwater Clubhouse. We all are very thankful for his dedication and contribution to Breakwater and are glad that he stays around as a friend, both next door at the Sag Harbor Yacht Club and here. Please join me in wishing Steve all the best and welcoming Jack! Many of you know Jack as Breakwater member and avid sailor, former mayor of North Haven, President of the Sag Harbor Little League Baseball and landscaper on the East End. We are delighted that he has agreed to step in as our new Club Steward for a seamless transition. Come down to the clubhouse anytime and meet him or introduce yourself.
Junior Sailing 2012 is starting this week. Bruce Tait and our new head coach Blade Hovekamp have been working hard to get everything ready and in shape. They lined up a motivated group of counselors for what looks to be another great season.
High School sailing finished a successful semester with enthusiastic participants and scholastic racing activities. Those who joined us at the Open House know that we are looking for an expanded program next year and need all the support we can get from our members, parents and friends. The High Schooler’s raised more than $ 500 at the event for the High School sailing program, and have further activities planned for the fall.
Adult Sailing lessons are now available, in addition to boat privileges. Please contact Ed Osias to book you individual sailing lesson or arrange for group lessons on our Catalina - contact details and the link is on our website.
Thursday Sailing for members will start in July. Drew Clark is setting this up again to sail with members and friends on his and other boats. 9 sunset sails for members in July and August are planned, weather permitting leaving the Breakwater dock around 5:30 pm, starting in July. Further details will be on the website soon, or contact Drew directly.
And last but not least Adventure Sail 2012 will happen on July 7. Charlene Kagel and Cam Gleason are organizing this traditional Breakwater event in cooperation with the National Women’s Sailing Association: a small sailing regatta for at-risk girls ages 10-15 and their sponsors, giving these young girls the opportunity to sail and race in Sag Harbor. They still need boats and “helpers”, please see the request & details below.
Following members’ requests we now have overnight docking privileges at the BYC dock for members’ yachts only. Members please note that Breakwater is a member of the US Sailing Association, ELIYA and Boat US. Membership benefits and discounts are available to you as BYC member. Call the office for details.
If you are interested to join the Breakwater Yacht Club to participate in our activities and to support our sailing programs, please find the application form on or website www.breakwateryc.org, you can join and pay for your membership, boating and docking privileges right there. Members who haven’t renewed their 2012 membership yet are reminded to do so, renewals before June 30 carry voting rights.
Happy Fathers Day!
Olaf Neubert, Commodore, and the 2012 BYC Board of Directors
