Dear Fellow Breakwater Member,
2010 will again be a fun year at Breakwater Yacht Club and we are anxious to welcome you back as a member. The season officially begins with our Commissioning on April 24th. The Commissioning begins at 4 PM with the usual pomp and cannons, followed by libations and Hors d’oerves.
The Wednesday night racing season begins with the May Series on May 5th. Spritfest will be held at the Club over the weekend of June 4th. The Summer Series begins on June 2nd and runs until September 1st. The Oz Race (requiring women at the helm) will be held July 7th. BYC will host the annual Sag Harbor Cup on August 14th. The Fall Series begins on September 8th through October 13th. The Last Race of the Season is scheduled for October 20th. This year, each Series will be kicked off with a BYOB dinner at the Club following the first race. See our website, www.breakwateryc.org to sign up for any of the races or series.
Thursday night sailing, a chance for sailors without boats to get out on the water, begins July 1st and continues until August 26th. Interested sailors should show up at BYC at 5:30PM. Participating members will invite you for an evening sail on their yachts, cruising the harbor from 6PM until … whenever.
BYC continues its community service programs. Adventure Sail, a program in conjunction with Southampton Town and disadvantaged girls, will be held July 10th and we encourage members with yachts to take out a few girls and their chaperones for an afternoon sail. We continue to offer scholarships to BYC’s Jr. Sailing
Program to local youths. You can sponsor a scholarship on the membership form attached – or simply donate some funds to offset costs of boat maintenance, sails or operating expenses to help with this program. BYC also sponsors the Pierson HS Sailing Team which has a competitive spring and fall program.
We are planning a fundraising party in August to raise funds to offset our community service efforts. We can promise good dancing, drinks and a terrific silent auction.
For 2010, in order to meet our budget, we raised dues for all classes of membership by approximately 10%.This is in line with rising costs for House and boat maintenance, fuel, etc., etc. At the same time we have increased rates for the Jr. Sailing and all other programs held at BYC. Dues must be paid be March 30th to enjoy your House and Dock privileges.
Membership remains a critical means of keeping our Club afloat. The Board has approved two initiatives for 2010 to allow us to recruit new members and re-instate past members who have left the Club. In 2010, new members may choose to pay their $250 initiation fee in two installments over two years. We hope this
reduces the “sticker shock” that writing a big check for initiation and dues can induce. And, we are granting an initiation fee amnesty for members who have left the Club – they will not have to pay another initiation fee if they re-join in 2010. So please, encourage new and past members to join us!
We appreciate your support and want to welcome you back as a member.
Fair winds,
Christopher DiSunno
Commodore
