Minutes from the first Regatta Committee meeting of 2006 at BYC on 1/04/2006.Committee Chairman: Chris Dowling, presided with Bruce Tait, Wayne Morse, Carol Morse, Barbara Intermaggio, Scott Gaeckle, Sharon Horn, Lee Oldak and Barry Browning attending.
First order of business was to finalize and approve our budget for 2006. Second, we discussed cleaning up and organizing the Racing page of the BYC website.

We discussed a June Race/Cruise to Greenport. This will comprise of a race to Greenport on Sat., June 17th and a race back on Sun., June 18th. We talked about the May Cup, Summer Series, and the Fall Series and agreed to raise the fees to allow for increased fuel prices to run the committee boat.

There will be five races in the May cup with one throwout. The summer Series has 14 races with 70% counting. The OZ Race will be sailed in July again. We are considering two other "fun" races. One for June and one for August. The Fall Series will have 7 races, of which 2 may be thrown out.A discount will be given to skippers that pay for all three series in full before the start of the May Cup. The Sag Harbor Cup is scheduled for July 8 & 9. We are working with the Fundraising Committee about the party on the 8th. We are also working on a format for Racing and Cruising boats.

We discussed the maintenance/upkeep of Sweet Pea. The One Design Committee had budgeted for side curtains for her and was decided that boat does need them. A new paint job is also necessary.

We will be forming two standing protest committees. Bruce Tait will head the Committee to hear the Non-Spinnaker division's protests. Chris Dowling will head the Spinnaker Division's protests. We discussed getting a US Sailing Judge in to hold a seminar on Protest Procedure. More to come on that!

Finally, we are going to include a "Rules Review" at each monthly RC Committee meeting. We will be discussing not only the Racing Rules of Sailing, but also the Rules of the Road and PHRF handicapping Rules. We encourage the membership to attend. This is important for all entrants to our three Wednesday Night Series as each entrant is going to have to pass a rules quiz with a score of 80% or higher in order to be allowed to enter.

OVER 1000 SAILORS HAVE TAKEN THE QUIZ - HAVE YOU?
Chris B of Chicago is the most recent winner of the North U Quiz Prize. The
Quiz has eight questions on Racing, Cruising, and Weather, including this:
Racing upwind on the first part of a beat in no current, you know that
further up the leg there's current running from left to right. Which way
should you go to set up for the current? Are you sure? Try the quiz. You
might learn something. You could win a prize. Learn about NorthU Tactics,
Cruising, Weather, and Performance Instruments Seminars at

QUOTE / UNQUOTE - Paul Cayard
"On the run just before the scoring gate, we had the longest run, 140 miles
in six hours, that is 560 miles/day pace. The boat is slamming downwind
very violently. No one can sleep when it is this rough. As you go from 25
to 30 knots of boat speed, the keel hums to a higher and higher pitch. Then
you feel the boat un-weigh itself, you go a bit weightless like in an
airplane sometimes and you just cringe in your bunk as you know the bottom
of the wave is coming. Sometimes it is just a big snowplow and rapid
deceleration which makes you hold onto your bunk so you don't slide forward
on top of the guy in front of you. Those are the ones which create two feet
of whitewater rolling down the deck. Other times we find the bottom by
doing a violent belly flop which shutters and send vibrations throughout
the boat. I am sure the other boats are doing the same because they are
going as fast as we are. It is not hard to spend time wondering how long
these boats can take this type of punishment." -- Paul Cayard, Pirates of
the Caribbean skipper
