Breakwater YC has been busy complying with its purpose, "to sponsor sailboat racing and sailing in and about the waters of Sag Harbor, to foster interest in sailboat racing and sailing in people of all ages and to interact with the community."
Free member checkouts for the boat use program will be available on Saturdays July 2, 9 and 16, from 9 to 12, after these dates checkouts will be by appointment only at a cost of $50.00. The High School Sailing program has expanded this year, it's second, to include middle school students. BYC, for the fourth time, hosted the Long Island J80 Championship, June 4-5. 15 boats were on the start line. BYC hosted a US Sailing Level One Instructor course along with a CPR class. The Summer Youth sailing program is in its second week. This is the 16th year BYC has provided this service to the community as well as providing 60 plus scholarships to local area youth. BYC will hold two sessions (four consecutive weeks each) of Adult Sailing classes using the club's two Catalina 22s. The July session is on Thursday evenings and a Saturday session begins July 30th. Breakwater members and their guests are invited to attend the after Wednesday Night Racing parties at the clubhouse. This Wednesday's (June 29) party is sponsored by WHITE LIGHTNING, JEZEBEL and HAZE. A signup sheet for party sponsorship is posted on the bulletin board in the clubhouse. Contributions are requested of all attendees. A collection jar will be out on the buffet table. These contributions will be used to stock the clubhouse with snacks, beverages, ice, and paper goods. If sufficient contributions are made light fare can be offered on the Wednesday nights that are not sponsored by the generosity of the racing boat owners. So if you want to hang out with a bunch of sailors, come join the fun. A note to members: Please have your guests sign into the guest log, which will be located on the table by the Southwest door.
The May Cup was a success and the Wednesday Night Racing is going strong. The Sunday One design series is in full swing and has expanded this year to include other one design dinghies. The Sag Harbor Cup is scheduled for August 20th. Harborfest will see America's Cup 12 meter boats racing in Shelter Island Sound. BYC member boats that raced in Off Soundings: Osprey 2nd, Skoot 10th, Bellatrix 8th, Ice Nine 4th, Jezebel 9th. Block Island Race Week: Ace 6th. Congratulations to all.
Adventuresail is scheduled for 1:00pm, July 9th. This event chartered by the National Women's Sailing Foundation, sponsored by the Town of Southampton and hosted by the Breakwater Yacht Club, provides local At-Risk Girls between the ages of 10-15 to serve as "crew members" on sailboats, and participate in a race in Sag Harbor. BYC has hosted this program for several years. Skippers are needed to volunteer their time and boats. Please contact Charlene Kagel (631)-283-1595 to volunteer. Don't forget that all of this information plus more is available at www.BreakwaterYC.org. Happy Sailing!
