Dear BYC members, January 2004
The temperature outside is 5 degrees, six inches of snow has fallen overnight, the Harbor is frozen over but many warm memories of last season’s BYC sailing adventures remain.
2003’s Annual November Membership meeting was well attended. Re-elected to the officer positions were: John Niewenhous; Commodore, Bruce Tait; Vice Commodore, Gayle Pickering; Secretary and Audrey Niewenhous; Treasurer. Board of Director Seats vacated by Mark Matthews, Jim Smyth, Betty Martin and Nancy Haynes were filled by Laura White, Sharon Horn, Lee Oldak and Rick Pickering. Many thanks are extended to our new board members, those that accepted nominations to run, and especially to those departing board members that have dedicated so many years to help make Breakwater Yacht Club what it is today!

BYC’s 2004 calendar is starting to fill. J80 Fleet IV in conjunction with BYC is honored to have been chosen to host the J80 North American Championship, June 4-6. 25 to 35 boats are expected to race. Last years J80 World Champion as well many other world class sailors will be competing here at the most prestigious North American J80 event of 2004! This event is going to be great fun for the entrants as well as for BYC members and our community. Your help is needed in many areas. If you would like to help or can offer competitor housing please contact David Jannetti at 631.921.2787 or djannetti@americanteleconnect.com.
BYC is hosting the JY15 Atlantic Coast Championship May 22-23. Last year’s ACC was a great success with 29 teams competing. If you would like to help or can offer competitor housing please contact Lee Oldak at 631.267.6325 or 1mortoy@amagansettbeachco.com.
The BYC/Pierson High School Sailing Club got off to a great start this past fall, meeting twice a week for most of September and October, culminating in a regatta on November 11 (very cold and windy). This program is a natural off shoot of a successful youth sailing program. The enthusiasm exhibited by the team members and parents was wonderful! April through June training will be held Tuesday afternoons from 3:00 to 5:00 and Saturdays from 1:00 to 3:00. Any Pierson High student can join and it’s free! If you know anyone that might be interested contact Bruce Tait or Chantal Bourel (team captain) at PHS. Ambitious plans for this spring are being formed. Donations are being solicited to allow us to acquire wetsuits, gloves, boots and other gear. Volunteers are also needed. If you can help in any way, please contact Bruce Tait at 631.725.4222 or btait@optonline.net. Many thanks to those BYC and community members that were instrumental in getting this program off of the ground. I predict that we will someday see world class sailors that got their start at BYC.
The USCG Auxiliary taught another Safe Boating Course January 10/17. Due to the new PWC regulations this class was well attended and more classes are planned. Contact Tisha Bouboulis at 631.725.3810 or TRMBG@hotmail.com for more information.
The Youth Sailing Program provided instruction to over 345 students last summer. This year, BYC will again be offering 60 scholarships to area public schools, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other local organizations. After 15 years of service to BYC and the community, Mark Matthews has stepped down as chair of this committee. Mark did an outstanding job in creating and building this program into what it is today. Thank you Mark! Gayle Pickering is now the Chair of the Youth Sailing Committee. If you would like to help her with this most important committee please contact her at 631.725.3642 or gpickeirng@breakwateryc.org.

2004 is going to be a big challenge for the Fundraising Committee. Every year this committee is expected to fill the budget shortfall of about $35,000.00. This is a difficult task. The help of the entire membership is needed. To meet these goals we are considering the following projects:
JY 15 raffle for the Sag Harbor Cup
Direct mail solicitation of our Membership
Direct mail solicitation of the Junior Sailing student’s parents.
Yacht and gear donations.
If think you can help with these projects or would like to be a member of the Fundraising Committee, or if you would like to make a donation, please contact Bruce Tait at 631.725.4222 or btait@optonline.net.
BYC’s articles of incorporation state that our purpose is to establish and maintain a youth sailing program and to provide sailing opportunities to young people, to provide instructors to those young people and to educate the public and young people about boating safety and to provide resources for the general public to learn about opportunities available to sailors...and ... to encourage and solicit contributions from the general public for the advancement of youth sailing. We are a 501(c) (3) Non Profit Corporation that is allowed to solicit and receive tax deductible contributions. Our By-Laws state that, “The purpose of the Club is to sponsor sailboat racing and sailing in and about the waters of Sag Harbor, to foster interest in sailboat racing and sailing in people of all ages and to interact with the community.”
Because of our non profit status and the stated purpose in our by-laws and articles of Incorporation, we were extremely fortunate to receive the lease for the property that we operate on from Sag Harbor Village. Due to the hard work and donations of many past and present Board of Directors, BYC members and contributors, we were able to build our Community Sailing Center and accumulate the boats and equipment that we operate with. Sometimes the question is poised: What do I get for being a member? The answer: The satisfaction of knowing that I am helping achieve the stated goal and purpose of the club that I joined. The reward: The satisfaction of giving back to the community that we all love so dearly and the enjoyment of the on and off water events sponsored by BYC.
General membership meetings, social events, seminars, and sailing events are in the planning stages. Please forward your ideas and comments to the board of directors using the email link on the main page of our website, www.BreakwaterYC.org. We all look forward to the ice in the harbor clearing so that we can start sailing again!
Sincerely,
John Niewenhous
BYC Commodore, 2004
