RCYC 2003 Fall Frostbite
JY-15 Regatta Report
I would like to thank everyone for attending Richmond County Yacht Club’s second annual Fall JY15 regatta, and making it another great success. We had an energetic 18 boat fleet with competitors from Richmond County Yacht Club, Raritan Yacht Club, Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club, and from as far as Sag Harbor Long Island.
Mother Nature delivered a three day weather system wind that started on Thursday with gusts to 60 knots, Friday gusts to 40 knots and by Saturday Great Kills Harbor, Staten Island NY was still experiencing 30 + gusts. With safety a primary concern of our race committee the decision was to delay the start ½ hour and begin racing at 12:30 PM, by 12:00 PM it had appeared to drop in velocity a few knots, and the committee gave the go ahead.
Derek Galen & Rachel Gruzen from Sag Harbor took race # 1 and it looked as if they would be a force to be reckoned with, and they were. Race # 2 was captured by Lee Oldak and Michael Gershenson also from Sag Harbor and it was looking as though our friends from Long Island were going to run a away with the series. By race # 3 the fleet was getting used to the shifts and gusts and in the race that saw the most boats cross the finish line (15) Jerry Orabona and Eric Leitner from Raritan took race #3. After getting in three quick W-1 courses the race committee sent the fleet on a W-2 and Doug Olsen and Chrissy Mahoney of Richmond County won race #4. Race #5 saw Jerry Orabona and Eric Leitner capture their second victory of the day in another twice around course. The last race of the day was captured by Bill Scalisi and Roy Woodford from the home fleet of RCYC.
Now I have to repeat the following from last year’s regatta report:
”Now then, we have all read articles by Stuart Walker and others (or maybe not) about series racing and many articles explain the need for consistency, minimizing “mistakes”, and not taking big risks in a long series.”
I wrote this sentence last year about Paul and Roy and decided to follow the advice this year. Myself and hard working/hiking crew Chrissy Mahoney took first place overall this year with only one first over the series of six races; however, we were consistent and took no major risks jibing downwind to avoid capsizing which proved important in this series. Second place went to Derek Galen & Rachel Gruzen from Sag Harbor and third went to Jerry Orabona and Eric Leitner from Raritan.
As always our race committee chairman Jerry Bertekap did a great job running the races with a support team of Ken Ottesen, Betsy Mahoney, and Vicki Neiner running the races from Mike & Courtney Moore’s Rebound.
Our heroes of the day however; were the volunteers on the crash boats who had a particularly busy day. They did a great job caring for the many capsized JY15’s on the race course and made sure everyone returned to shore safe and sound. Those teams included Rich Kohn, Chris Leykam and Sean Mahoney on the inflatable, Tom Reilly, Ken Pickett, and Missy Gain on the West Bank and Ron Neglia, Larry Owen, Steve O’Neill, Tim Mahoney and Casey Mahoney on the Romer Shoals.
Our race organizers of Paul and Joy Scalisi (our newlyweds), Missy Gain, Frank Gain, Courtney Moore Frank and T Scalisi and Denise Olsen did an extraordinary job with awards, food, raffles, and registration, scoring and keeper prizes (the shirts are now famous after only two years). People were actually removing the shirts they showed up in and putting on the regatta shirt… again. I did notice the front of the shirt is heavy air and the back is light air…and for all those whose excuse for not racing was raking leaves…all the racers leaves ended up in our neighbors’ yards while we were out having a blast planing our JY15’s in Great Kills Harbor.
See you in 2004
